How Well Do You Know Them?

It is often said that it is not who you know that matters, it is who knows you. Well I would like to extend this statement by saying that it is not only who you know and who knows you, but how well do you know them and they you?

In business, networking is the ultimate form of promotion. It can help you to obtain new clients, a new job, or even help you to move up the corporate ladder. It is the process of building relationships. Any time that you attend a meeting, trade show, or a social function, you are networking whether you realize it or not. It is the relationship that you have with people, a prospect or a client that makes the difference between success and failure.

Often we fail to realize the reasons that we have for doing business with an individual or a company. In the case of products that we regularly buy, what helps us to make the buying decision? There are those that will buy a specific brand of product because they trust that brand to be of a high quality or durability. There are others that will make a buying decision based on price, although this is less frequently the case. Often we simply do business because we feel good about it. In fact most purchases or decisions to do business are based on two things. Trust and comfort. Trust is a very intangible emotion or feeling. How do you measure it? How do you develop it?

Trust is measured by the feelings that are generated by a process of letting someone get to know more about you than just product, features and price. I know a gentleman who provides a seminar on selling to C-level executives. He says that to sell to the C-level executive you have to be more than a salesperson selling a product or service. To sell to the executive level, you have to be more of an advisor. You have to find needs other than the ones that you can fulfill and help them to fulfill these needs. In doing this, you become a “trusted advisor”. They feel “comfortable” that you have their interests in mind more than just making a quick sale and a commission.

In our daily process of seeking prospective clients, do we often just look for a person to pitch, or do we spend a bit more time getting to know them before we try to sell?

When we take the time to know a persons desires, dreams, and needs, and make an honest effort to help them realize that these things are important to us, we are really on the fast track to doing business with them. We are building the trust, confidence, comfort level, and most importantly the relationship that is needed to not only make the sale, but to create in them a resource for endless referrals.

As we go into the community meeting people who are prospective clients, we should keep the following in mind. The customer is a person just like me. The customer has needs other than the one that I can fulfill. Until I understand what the ultimate goal or dream of the prospect is, I cannot fulfill it with my product or service.

Selling and networking are about relationships. You sell in everything that you do whether you realize it or not. The time is now for more effective selling. Change the way you think about the prospect and the prospect will change the way that they think about you.

Electable Ralph

Hey President Nader! Won’t you introduce us to your running mate? We expect you might have a team player in mind. The democratic nominee? Let’s see a team effort to multiply electability. Run with your team. We know who we’d get with George Bush and don’t care who we’d get with John Kerry.

Here is the opportunity for which more than half of America has been waiting. America’s best hope to dump corporate government and the two party stranglehold. A true Independent candidate for millions of Independent voters. Voters who dared not hope for any meaningful change as a result of this November election. A candidate who could win the election with just over one third of the vote. A candidate who will speak for disaffected and disenfranchised Americans.

Try to imagine a President who will veto every corporate give away Congress passes, for four to eight years. Ralph is a spoiler all right. Not for Democrats who thought electability was all that mattered; but for all of us who have had enough of the puppets of corporate money. We know Ralph is no friend of corporate power and this is his main reason for providing America an alternative. Thank you Ralph! America is indebted for your patriotism. You have redefined the word for us.

I recently wrote it would be worth a twenty year effort to empower third parties to compete with the good buddy, just us, Democans in Washington, D.C. Imagine how an Independent, no party President could advance that cause in four years. Maybe the party the American people have been catering is nearly over.

Democrats lost the White House in 2000, the minute their electable candidate called George Bush and conceded a close election, before the votes were counted or contested. Because Democrats can’t see or appreciate the truth that they had backed a quitter, they blamed a Republican court and Ralph Nader for the Bush victory. Now they are blaming Ralph for this year’s defeat. It is good they can read the writing on the wall and proclaim it. Maybe having someone to blame is what matters most to Democrats. As long as they are out of power, they have plenty of people to blame. Let’s give them what they want.

Democrats are supporting not their best candidate, but the one they are guessing can beat George Bush. Anybody but Bush they cry! John Kerry is an anybody - he’ll do. He could not defeat President Bush if Ralph Nader did not run.

Ralph Nader just made a Kerry victory impossible and is the real and only alternative to our current President(s). The only candidate who can defeat him hem this election. This is precisely because he can split the vote three ways, mobilize the youth, Independents, non voters and bring people to the polls that are fed up with business as usual. That segment of America, over half the electorate, can and probably will make Ralph Nader a shoe - in.

Democrats who supported Howard Dean should be backing Ralph. Democrats who supported Wesley Clark should be supporting Ralph. Those of us who would support Dennis Kucinich, can support Ralph Nader. I think Dennis might be an Independent pretending to be a Democrat. One who may be waiting until after the convention to support Ralph. Wouldn’t Dennis make a good Vice President?

Everyone who wants no more of George Bush and company should support Ralph Nader and company. All those who have been backing unelectable Democrats, who can’t defeat George Bush, should support Nader, if they really want change in Washington. It’s not about electability any more. It’s about sweet, real, meaningful change - reformation. Anyone but the same or another Republicrat!

The Democrats are already on the attack against Ralph. He knew they would be and he is running anyway. I like that. You should too. Republicans are soon going to be more worried about Ralph Nader than they ever were John Kerry. They know he is going after the disenfranchised majority that will not vote for puppets. All President Nader has to do is convince them this is their best chance to change nearly everything that is wrong with the system - and the 2008 elections. Can we look that far ahead any more? I say Ralph Nader will get more than fifty percent of all votes cast and the puppet lovers will split what remains. If America wants change, we’ll have a Nader landslide victory.

He is ready to run against John Kerry and George Bush. He knows he can win, same as you and I do. Democrats are saying he’ll get fewer votes than last time and cannot win. They are as wrong as they have ever been. It’s amusing to hear them begging him not to run. Watch the support he gets as John Kerry goes the way of Howard Dean.

Howard Dean should be supporting Ralph Nader, even though he said he would support the Democratic nominee. If party is more important to Howard than the principles he has been espousing, it explains why he is not the Democratic nominee.

Ralph Nader is an opportunity for traditional Democrats and Republicans, moderates, liberals and conservatives; to send a powerful message to Washington, no matter who is elected President. No more corporate government. No more puppet government. Ralph has just given the silent majority a voice. Ralph Nader is the beginning of the end of the status quo and the Old World Order.

President Bush was sitting pretty until now. There was not a Democrat who could beat him. He had to beat himself by messing up again between now and November. Odds are good he will or has and it isn’t public knowledge yet. Republicans will be saying anyone but Kerry.

Our President does not have much chance of re-election. He’s following in his daddy’s footsteps don’t you know? The two party madness was his best chance. If you like being ruled by corporations, vote Republicrat. If you’ve had enough of 20th Century scam government, Ralph Nader is the only alternative at this point. One who has served people long, well and lives to do so. Someone who can be trusted. Insider government is in crisis. Must stop Ralph. Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot, where are you? Let’s split the ticket five ways and see what happens.

Learn About Formula 1 Motor Racing

In the early 1900’s, F1 went ahead with rickety motor cars & elder gentleman racing drivers, nevertheless the genuine Formula One title did not start until the nineteen fifty’s. Whilst the several years drove by and the title improved, it rapidly became understandable that Formula 1 Motor Racing was the high point for motorsport. The motor cars were the best, the knowledge was the most developed & the racing drivers were at the best of their condition coming from countries all across the world.

With the opening of sponsorship taking notice, Formula One took on it’s more business arrangement & can without doubt at present be taken seriously as huge business ? with venture capital reaching millions and even billions of dollars with immense ease. A race weekend covers Friday, Saturday & Sunday, a F1 weekend is an extreme ride, from early testing, to the last laps of the grand prix.

The basic formation consists of a Formula One race every few weeks. Every so often the Formula 1 calendar is altered with a little bit and there are Formula 1 races on back-to-back weekends, or on occasions you have to go a couple weeks before even seeing the household F1 racing drivers again. When it is time for the next Formula 1 motor race, you can study the news for your much-loved Formula 1 constructor as they arrive at the destination. The Real Secret to Understanding Web Statistics

Understanding what your visitors do on your site is crucial
information. If your visitors proceed to purchase a product but
then a large majority leaves the site when they get to a
specific page in the order process, you need to know about it.
It could be that this page is confusing or hard to use. Fixing
it could increase your sales by 200%. This is just an example;
there are many reasons why you want a detailed analysis of your
site visitors.

Most website hosting services offer a stats package that you can
study. If you’re not sure where this is, call up your hosting
service and ask them. Statistics are a vital part of tracking
your marketing progress. If you don’t have access to website
statistics get a package that can help you in this area. Do not
get a counter that simply shows how many visitors you’ve had.
You’ll be missing out on vital information that can help
strengthen weaknesses in your site.

A good website hosting service offers traffic logs that provide
an invaluable insight into the traffic being referred to a web
site from various sources such as search engines, directories
and other links.

Unfortunately traffic tracking provided by web hosting services
is often in the form of raw traffic log files or other difficult
to understand cryptic formats. These log files are basically
text files that describe actions on the site. It is literally
impossible to use the raw log files to understand what your
visitors are doing. If you do not have the patience to go
through these huge traffic logs, opting for a traffic-logging
package would be a good idea.

Basically, two options are available to you and these are: using
a log analysis package or subscribing to a remotely hosted
traffic logging service. A remotely hosted traffic logging
service may be easy to use and is generally the cheaper option
of the two. WebTrends Live and HitsLink are two good, remotely
hosted, traffic-monitoring services worth considering. However,
WebTrends Live is a more complicated system and is suitable for
larger ecommerce websites. “SuperStats” is another recommended
traffic logging service.

These services do not use your log files. Typically a small
section of code is placed on any page you want to track. When
the page is viewed, information is stored on the remote server
and available in real time to view in charts and tables form.

Log analysis packages are typically expensive to buy and complex
to set up. Apart from commercial packages there are also some
free log analysis packages available, such as Analog.

A good traffic logging service would provide statistics
pertaining to the following:

” How many people visit your site? ” Where are they from? ” How
are visitors finding your site? ” What traffic is coming from
search engines, links from other sites, and other sources? ”
What keyword search phrases are they using to find your site? ”
What pages are frequented the most - what information are
visitors most interested in? ” How do visitors navigate within
your web site?

Knowing the answers to these and other fundamental questions is
essential for making informed decisions that maximize the return
on investment (ROI) of your web site investment.

The most important aspect of tracking visitors to your website
is analyzing all the statistics you get from your tracking
software. The three main statistics that will show your overall
progress are hits, visitors and page views. Hits are tracked
when any picture or page loads from your server on to a
visitor’s browser. Hits, however, can be very misleading. It is
quite an irrelevant statistic for your website.

The statistic that is probably the most important for a website
is Page Views/Visitors. This gives you a good indication of two
things. First, how many people are coming to your site, and
secondly how long are they staying on your site. If you have 250
visitors and 300 page views you can figure that most visitors
view one page on your site and then leave. Generally, if you’re
not getting 2 page views per visitor then you should consider
upgrading your site’s content so your visitors will stay around
longer.

If you see the number of visitors you have increasing as well as
the number of page views per visitor increasing then keep up the
good work! Always look for this stat as an overall barometer of
how your site design is going and if your marketing campaigns
are taking hold. Also, a good stat to look for is unique
visitors. Once a person visits your site they will not be added
to the unique visitors’ category if they visit again. This is a
good way to track new visitors to your website.

Page views are a good indication of how “sticky” your website
is. A good statistic to keep is Page Views divided by the number
of Visitors you have. This statistic will give you a good idea
if your content is interesting and if your visitors are staying
on your site for a long time and surfing.

Some people are intimidated by web traffic statistics (mostly
because of the sheer volume of data available), but they
shouldn’t be. While there are many highly specialized statistics
that can be used for more in-depth web traffic analysis, the
above areas alone can provide invaluable information on your
visitors and your website performance. Remember- this data is
available for a reason. It’s up to you to use it.

Portrait Photography Tips and Methods

Portrait is defined as, “A likeness of a person, especially one
showing the face, that is created by a painter or photographer,
for example.” In the area of portrait photography there are some
guidelines that you should consider when you go to take photos
of people.

The different types of portraits are: close-ups, facial shots,
upper body shots or environmental portraits. Environmental
portraits are where you focus on the subject and on their
surroundings that provide more character to the subject.

When people have a camera in their face it usually makes them
nervous and they will try to put on a face that does not portray
who they really are. The real skill to portrait photography is
trying to capture photos when the subjects are comfortable and
not worried about a camera.

Many professional photographers try to capture their subject’s
true essence by using tricks. One example of this is counting to
three so the subject prepares and then while they are relaxing
after taking a planned photo the photographer will snap a few
more unplanned photos. In most cases the subject won’t even know
that more than one photo was taken but it’s usually the photos
that the subject wasn’t expecting that capture their true
essence.

Another more common strategy professionals use is to tell funny
jokes that make their subjects genuinely laugh or smile. I’m
sure that you have probably experienced something like this
yourself.

CLOSE-UP PORTRAITS

These usually have the subject’s shoulders and head or less.
They are framed around the face. These are the most common and
best at capturing expressions and glamour shots. For these it is
very important to have the light coming from a good angle. To
accent wrinkles or small details you should have the light
coming from the side or from the top. To create flattering
pictures you should choose a cloudy day or try to create
diffused light so there are hardly any shadows. Also make sure
the subject is brighter than the background to reduce
distraction.

For close-up portraits you should use a wide aperture (low
f/stop) to make the background out of focus and therefore less
of a distraction. Professionals commonly use a fixed telephoto
lens that’s 90 mm or higher for portraits in order to
de-emphasize the subject’s nose or any other unflattering
feature. It works because at that distance the nose or any other
feature does not seem closer to the camera than the rest of the
face.

UPPER BODY OR MIDRANGE PORTRAITS

These are easier to capture because the subject is probably more
relaxed because it’s less personal. These include a little more
of the background than close-ups. These are commonly used for
both single subjects and multiple subjects. This is the kind of
portrait used to mark occasions such as graduation, yearbook,
birthdays and other parties. The ideal lens would be about a 90
mm fixed telephoto or more wide angle depending on how many
subjects there are.

ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITS

These are the portraits that let you into the life of a subject.
They might include the whole subject in a scenario or the
subject participating in some hobby that they enjoy. These are
best for telling a story to the viewer about the subject. They
are almost always used by photojournalists to look into the
lives of interesting people. They also make great Black and
White pictures.

Use this information to develop what kind of portrait style you
would like to take, and then practice it before dealing with any
serious clients.

Leadership & Employee Performance - Build a Bon Fire with The Annual Reviews

First of all, if all you ever do is an annual performance review for your employees, they are worthless. Put every last one of them in a big pile and burn them. The scenario of annual performance reviews often goes like this;

“I have nine reviews I have to get done by the end of the month. I feel more pressure about completing the review than I feel an obligation to the employees to let them know how they are really doing. How I can help them.”

Additionally, since you only do one review a year, chances are you base your judgment about the employee’s performance on the last two months or so. If the employee happened to have done something wrong during that two month period, they get a poor review. Conversely, if they did everything right in those two months, they get a good review. A good review even if they performed very poorly throughout most of the year. Is that really justice?

Some critics promote the theory that annual reviews are worthless and should be abolished altogether. However, that really isn’t an option. Performance reviews are and have been a corner stone for managing performance. It is about accountability, right? In reality, performance reviews don’t hold people accountable, managers do. However, employees must understand what the employers expectations are of them. This can not be accomplished in a once a year meeting.

The purpose of a performance review is not to build a case for termination. Nor is its purpose to write a hallmark moment about how wonderful the employee is. The purpose of a performance review is to let the employee know where they stand. How they are doing. To determine what the company can do to help them become the best at what they do. To recognize their contributions and also to help them recognize their weaknesses and where they may need additional training and development. You can not accomplish those objectives if you are forced to complete multiple reviews under pressure. You can not accomplish those objectives if you only think about the last several months of the employee’s performance.

As managers, as leaders, we owe it to our employees to help them develop their talents. It’s good for them, it’s good for us and it is good for the company. We need to make an individual commitment to every one of our direct reports that we will spend a minimum of thirty minutes per month discussing their performance. What they are doing well and what they need to work on. A simple three by five card noting our discussion thrown into their file provides tremendous insight when it comes time to do their annual review. (e-mail rick@ceostrategist.com for a sample card form) We now have twelve individual documented discussions to refer to when completing their review. It also will show their progress. How they follow direction. What kind of support, training, mentoring or coaching that has taken place over the course of a year?

Reviews will never be 100% accurate and 100 % honest. It’s a good idea to review the reviews especially if they only occur annually. This should be done by Human Resources. Another concept for making reviews more accurate is the utilization of 360 degree reviews. This includes having employees reviewed by their boss, their peers and subordinates if applicable. Keeping reviews as objective as possible with definitive key performance measurements also reduces the human factor. Yes, performance reviews will probably never go away. We must not lose sight of the fact that the more critical aspect of leadership, coaching and mentoring is the actual setting and understanding of expectations.

Why are performance reviews important?

Performance reviews are important because employees want to be held accountable. Employees want to know how they are doing. Employees can not strive for excellence if they do not know where they stand. Performance reviews can guide an employee’s progress. They can identify the employee’s career path and they can identify area’s of performance that need improvement and create a plan with input from the employee to correct the problems. In order for employees to improve and maintain their job performance and skills, it is necessary to periodically review their performance and provide appropriate feedback, coaching and mentoring..

The starting point of any coaching process is setting goals and expectations and then observing behavior and providing specific performance feedback. That is what a performance review is all about. When you are reviewing performance, there is a process that you should follow.

When reviewing performance it is necessary to observe your employee’s behaviors throughout the year. A monthly coaching discussion will keep the employee informed and will allow you to make an objective assessment of the employees performance and progress.

Here are a few tips to observing performance:

Performance observance can happen in numerous different ways depending upon the employees job function. Outside sales is easy. A Ride Along by the Sales Manager creates a great opportunity to observe performance. Other observation techniques include:

• Spending a day a month actually working in the warehouse

• In Basket e-mail training (The employee is asked to handle every e-mail you receive in a day and make a decision as to what action should be taken)

• Reviewing specific metric KPI’s (key performance indicators)

• Working side by side with the employee by assigning a special project

Evaluate——–Tips on Performance Reviews

• Be fair and objective by assessing job performance against pre-determined job-related performance standards.

• Involve the employee in the development of the action plan.

• Include specific and measurable goals with action plans on how to reach them. Set time frames to review accomplished goals, identify possible obstacles and identify ways to overcome them.

• Encourage feedback from your employee.

• Review a summary of your feedback by beginning with the employee’s strengths and then tactfully move into the weaknesses.

• End the review by summarizing the action plan for improvements, so your employee clearly understands what’s expected of him or her. End on a positive note and set a date for the next review.

The outcome of this review should come as no surprise to the employee, if you are continually reviewing, evaluating, and providing feedback.

Conducting the Review:

Create a self review. Have your EMPLOYEE rate themselves by filling out a Performance Evaluation prior to their review. Tell them to provide specific examples to back up their ratings. Review their evaluation before you meet. This will provide for a more interactive meeting. Always focus on a positive before you discuss a negative. Keep the review as objective as possible utilizing facts and data. Follow your company review form precisely. It is organized in the fashion it is in for a reason. Do not speculate; make assumptions or offer opinions as to cause. Do ask a lot of questions. Focus on the differences between the self review and your review of the employee. Create a continuous follow up schedule.

Remember, employees are your most precious asset. Respect them, train them, coach and mentor them, trust them and they will create competitive advantage for your company.

Great Baseball Quotes

I love what prominent baseball people have to say about the great ballplayers. They seem to eloquently capture what we are thinking. “It was his solemn duty to catch a ball that wasn’t in the stands.” - Monte Irvin (Newark Eagles OF, May 6, 1981), on Willie Mays

“Maybe they should see if his body is corked.” - Howard ‘Hojo’ Johnson (NY Mets), on Bo Jackson, from Sports Illustrated, October 19, 1986

“When he took BP everybody would kind of stop what they were doing and watch.” - Jim Kaat, former pitcher, on Mickey Mantle

“I played with him for nine years and marveled at how hard he hit and how fast he ran. How can anyone ever forget the catch he made on Gil Hodges’ line drive to save Don Larsen’s perfect game?” - Tony Kubek, former shortstop, on Mickey Mantle

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” - Jackie Robinson

“Having Willie Stargell on your ball club is like having a diamond ring on your finger.” Chuck Tanner

“Ted Williams was the greatest hitter I ever saw, but (Joe) DiMaggio was the greatest all around player.” Bob Feller

“No one hit home runs the way Babe (Ruth) did. They were something special. They were like homing pigeons. The ball would leave the bat, pause briefly, suddenly gain its bearings, then take off for the stands.” Lefty Gomez

“When Neil Armstong first set foot on the moon, he and all the space scientists were puzzled by an unidentifiable white object. I knew immediately what it was. That was a home run ball hit off me in 1933 by Jimmie Foxx.” Lefty Gomez

“Every time Johnny Bench throws, everybody in baseball drools.” - Harry Dalton

“He (Babe Ruth) hits a ball harder and further than any man I ever saw.” - Bill Dickey
“He (Lou Gehrig) just went out and did his job every day.” Bill Dickey

“He gets better every year, that’s what’s remarkable about him. Some guys are good and stay good. Some guys are good and get better. He reminds me of Kareem. Hubie Brown said that Kareem worked at the beginning of every season to improve some facet of his game. It’s that way with the best, whatever the profession. That’s the way this kid is.”
Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes - Talking about Derek Jeter

“I think he was one of the greatest third basemen of all time. He had one of the sweetest swings I ever saw.” - Teammate Johnny Logan - Referring to Eddie Mathews
