15 Hair Care Myths - The Truth and The Lies

Everyone has a favourite myth about hair care - and we usually never let the truth get in the way of a good legend! This article examines some of the most widely known - and the reality behind the myths.

1. Excessive washing of hair causes hair loss/dryness.

FALSE: Frequency of washing doesn’t harm hair. Wash it as often as you like, although the recommendation is three times a week. The right shampoo for your hair type and texture will actually add moisture, body and beauty to your hair.

2. More shampoo = cleaner hair.

FALSE: Don’t waste your shampoo! A dollop of shampoo, about the size of a quarter is usually enough for long hair. Very long hair may take a little more.

3. Conditioner helps repair split ends.

FALSE: No conditioner can “repair” damaged hair. What it can do is smooth down the cuticle and make hair seem in better condition. A good conditioner can also prevent damage from occurring in the first place.

4. Blow-drying produces hair loss.

FALSE: Blow-drying can damage, burn or dry hair, which can cause it to fall, but the hair will grow back immediately. This is not permanent hair loss.

5. Sleeping with wet hair causes scalp fungus.

FALSE: Scalp or fungal diseases can’t be caught from sleeping with wet scalps. Scalp infections require prior involvement with infected sources such as humans, tainted hair care tools or animals. Scalp fungus (tinea capitis) mainly affects children, whose immune systems make them more susceptible to skin infections.

6. To get your hair to grow, brush 100 strokes each day.

FALSE: Brushing that much can damage the hair cuticle. NOT recommended! Actually, your hair reacts better to a comb than a brush. Brushing it will only lead to split ends and hair breakage.

7. Sharing combs and brushes can spread scalp diseases.

TRUE: Lice and other parasites can be transported from scalp to scalp through the sharing of combs, brushes and other hair care tools.

8. Cutting hair makes it grow faster and/or thicker.

FALSE: This common misconception comes from the fact that hair is thicker at the base than it is at the tip, so shorter hair appears thicker at first. Cutting your hair does not affect its normal biologically determined growth rate or overall texture. Thin, limp or fine hair will not ever grow thicker in response to a haircut. Plump up your hair by using volume enhancing hair care products, experimenting with a hair fattening blunt cut or getting a texturizing perm or color treatment.

9. Color treatment causes hair loss.

FALSE: Most hair coloring products contain chemicals that can do serious harm to the hair itself if not properly used, but it wont instigate hair loss.

10. Salon products are identical to drugstore products.

FALSE: Although there are exceptions, salon products generally contain higher quality, more expensive ingredients that are designed to consistently provide more intensive cleansing, moisturizing and conditioning results. The quality ingredients found in salon products are not usually found in drugstore brands. If in doubt - read the labels.

11. Long sun exposure favors hair loss.

FALSE: Your hair acts as a shield against the sun. Hair loss appears at the follicle level and so the sun would have to penetrate at this depth to do any damage.

12. Diet is related to hair loss.

TRUE: it’s important to eat right in order to be generally healthy. However, no individual food has been proven to be beneficial or detrimental to hair.

13. Stress causes hair loss.

TRUE: Severe stress (e.g. surgery or a death in the family), can shut down hair production, causing temporary hairloss (alopecia areata). The scalp usually recuperates, though, and hair grows back

14. Wearing tight braids, ponytails or buns causes baldness.

TRUE: Traction alopecia is a very real hair loss condition that is quite common amongst older African American women. It results from wearing tight ponytails, cornrows or buns over an extended period of time. Over time, hair breakage or loss as the result of tight, stressed styles, can become permanent. Avoid this potential problem by opting for looser styles that minimize scalp tension.

15. Smoking causes gray hair.

TRUE: According to J. G. Mosley of the Leigh Infirmary in Lancashire, England in an article in Science News (January 11, 1997) smokers are four times more likely to have gray hair than non-smokers. Even worse, smoking has been conclusively linked to accelerated hair loss.

SUMMARY

Heard another myth about hair? Do your research - ask an expert! This doesn’t include your grandmother, best friend or local barmaid. Instead, talk to an experienced hairdresser or a trichologist. Always get the real facts before you act on any hair myths - you owe it to your hair.

hope is available to us

This night was a drizzly one. I am awake, sitting on my bed and thinking. Sleep had refused to come to me, and my rational self-was demanding an explanation. I am wishing there is someone I can talk to,but in the absence of anyone; I try to talk to myself but my voice is a mixture of revulsion and amazement.

All day long, my mind had turned to a creative artist busy painting a picture of the agonies of the common man in my country. And as I begin to ponder on why the common man is been subjugated to the whims and caprices of those he had chosen to lead him. I also wonder why his resistance to these people who have put on selfenrichment as a breastplate and an helmet of greed on their heads has been so feeble. At the thought of his resignation to fate,I feel pains slashing at my heart.

I move over to the center of my bedroom, from this position I move my neck to and fro as if I am searching for that season when the common man had a reason that gave birth to a curiosity on his part as to what was on the top of and what lied on the other side of the mountain. When his determination was his sable vehicle of courage.

I walk over to the table beside my window and I pick up a picture. I look at it and memories come flooding back to me. The picture is a snapshot of a time when he had a driving urge to search for that beacon like light that he knew with all certainty would bring him delight.

Once upon a time, the motion of living was so mild, now everything has become the aversion of something else. The truth has been left behind in the street and honesty is turned backwards. Those chosen to lead the common man have put on the garmet of corruption to cover up their ugly nakedness, thus making the motion of surviving to suddenly become so wild. He has been left with a gaping void in the fabric of his live and almost unendurable senses of know nothing.

I lay the picture to rest on the table,I touch my face for the tear that is about to stream down my cheeks and my stomach becomes filled with bubbles of dissapointment. A dissapoinment that speaks of their inconsiderate actions and non chalant reactions to the common man’s survivability. It is such a precarious situation, what he is going through in his attempt to stay afloat on a rampaging sea. He is striving to reach the shore by struggling to hold on to a piece of log to overcome the tide. It looks like he is pissing in a net.

He now cry’s in is sleep because his eyes refuse to close so deep, and the beep of the alarm clock every morning makes his heart leap like he is on a bumpy ride. The sound of dawn has lost its sweetness; the taste now is like a knife to his weak heart.

Everyday in his live is painted with the colures of apprehension; everywhere speaks of the face of depression. his face! He has completely fallen apart, the travails of life is now the currency of his world and poverty has become the path that is leading him into a tomorrow that is pregnant with a sunlight that will only skim glimmers of hope.

Why is the strength in his faith to overcome his fate becoming so little? Why does he grope for the wall like the blind?

With jerky unsure movements I walk over to the window and stare into the open, straining to keep my gaze on the moon as if my answers are written on it.

I know that his mind is filled with so much pain and anguish. I also know that lately he has become a stranger to a smile, for the wants and needs that he cherishes have refused to flourish. Nevertheless this is not a reason for him to become an outcast like Cain, just wandering, moping and stumbling at noonday as in the night.

The going has become rougher for him. Now,his reaction needs to become tougher too. it is written in a book that “sorrows will endure for the night, and joy will come in the morning”.

Hope is available to him

Website not selling? Twelve questions you should ask yourself

So your website is getting visitors, but not enough are buying. A common online problem, unfortunately. Here are twelve common faults found with websites that don’t sell. If you answer no to any of them, you need to take action. 1)Does your text focus on emphasizing the benefits and the results the customer will get from purchasing and using it? Sales copy needs to be focused on the benefits to the end user, not on the features of the product. List the features, and then translate them into benefits the customer will get. Move away from “our Widget does this, this and this..” to “You will soon be doing this ..” 2)Does your website convey enough strong benefits? Brainstorm to come up with a list of benefits. Rank them in order of importance. Then mention them in order throughout the text, best first. Summarizing them with bullet points too also works great. 3)Does you text stimulate the emotions? People buy with the heart not the head - so try and stimulate emotions - use words to paint a picture of life after they’ve bought your product ” Imagine the freedom of no more back pain…” or “…money worries could soon be a thing of the past, and you could soon be taking those exotic vacations…”. 4))Does the headline grab and draw you in? You’ve got to try to stop them dead in their tracks with the headline. Use the best benefit of your product, and create interest so they read on. Make it hard hitting, but not unbelievable. 5)Do you have a call to action? People put off decisions, even if they’re 90% sold on your product, they may still decide to “sleep on it”. Don’t let them have time to forget - give them an incentive to purchase now - discounts, bonuses etc. 6)Does your website load and function ok? Slow load times may cause people to get impatient and go elsewhere, even though it registers a visit. Do all links work, and more importantly, have you tested your order page by running dummy orders? 7)Do you have any testimonials from satisfied customers?

Testimonials are everywhere online, and people expect them as a matter of course. Ask those who have purchased what they thought -email them a simple customer satisfaction survey, offer a freebie for replying and use the best comments. If your product is free, try a testimonial swap with a seller of a complementary (but not directly competing) product -offer to review his product if he reviews yours.

8)Do you take a credit cards?

I shouldn’t really have to ask this now should I? It’s a plain fact that you are going to lose a huge amount of customers if you don’t accept them.

9)Are you absolutely sure there’s a market for it?

Does anyone else sell anything similar -if so, there should be a market for it. If it’s a highly unique product, did you do a survey or market research to see if anyone wanted to buy it? If not, canvass opinion from forums and newsgroups.

10)Is your website easy on the eye?

Strong colors can make text difficult to read -it doesn’t matter how good your offer is, if someone gets a headache looking at the screen there going to give up.

11)Do you offer a guarantee?

Most people are wary of getting “scammed” online, so remove those doubts - offer a guarantee. Make it as unconditional as you can.

12)Can you compete with your competitors?

Do you have any big competitors who are just cornering the market and “blowing you away”? Are customers just visiting your site to “comparison shop” and returning to your competitor to buy. If this is a possibility, try to devise a unique selling point (USP) which differentiates your product from others - perhaps you can compete on quality, benefits, or price. Emphasise the differences and advantages of your product. Research your market and familiarize yourself with what else is on offer. Then carve out a niche for your product.

Once you can honestly answer “yes” to all the above questions, it’s just a matter of constant fine-tuning until you get a decent level of sales. You’re never going to sell to everyone who visits your site, but you can do lots to increase the odds in your favor. I hope this helps in your future marketing decisions.

Here’s How Cell Phones Make Your Life Easier

Cell phones, the prepaid ones, are the great way to stay within your budget restraints. You will either make an adjustment to how many minutes the prepaid cellular covers, or discipline yourself to use less minutes.

Purchasing prepaid cell phones is made very simple, regardless of what their credit situation is. You can purchase a prepaid cell phone without a credit card, without any contract, and without any deposit required.

Cell phones are a great way to get connected even if you are far away. If you continue a regular schedule to purchase prepaid cellular service with a company, they will eventually approve you for regular monthly service.

Remember that prepaid cell phones do have a higher per-minute cost. A prepaid cellular is a great gift. You are giving a gift of a functional cellular that can be used right away instead of the hassle to activate and register before using. With this gift, the receiver has the choice of continuing with prepaid cell phone service once the airtime runs out or switching to a monthly service plan.

Cell phones have some sort of entertainment programs on most new digital, ranging from simple dice-throwing games to memory and logic puzzles. Whether you want to communicate regularly with your family and friends or the cellular phone is a valuable tool for your business, makes little difference to your choice of phones.

Beginning Runner - A Simple Plan to Get Started

How to Run Faster than a Three-Toed Sloth…

or…

Learn How to Run Faster than when I’m Lying on the Couch

“How to Run Faster?” is the WRONG question!!!

The philosophy we espouse at http://www.ordinaryrunner.com/ is “Running by Minutes” — a less intense attitude, and tailored for SUCCESS, not automatic failure!

Running by Minutes!

That’s it. It’s really very simple. It’s a bonanza of running for beginners!

The important thing:

Start slowly and build… Slowly and Consistenly!

Rather than being a slave to mileage logs, always trying to get in the right number of miles per day, even when you feel like your legs are made of Jello…

The Ordinary Runner simply puts in the MINUTES!

That way, if you feel great one day, you can run a little faster. (And if you feel like a slug, you can run a little slower.) Just run the number of minutes you have set for the day!

You still get your run in for the day, whether you feel great or feel lousy!

This is a much lower pressure approach to fitness, and much more enjoyable!

Remember when you were a kid…

… You could run! You did it all the time!

Running is natural. God made us to run!

That means you can learn to do it again! Just run!

You won’t have to worry about how to run faster…

… The more you run, the faster you’ll get, naturally!

It may have been a long time since you ran!

But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it again!

Just remember the most important thing:

JUST KEEP MOVING!

And don’t feel the pressure that you’ve got to run fast! Remember, you’re in the top 5% of people in the world if you just get out there and run, whether it’s slow…

… or even slower!

Here’s a 7-Week plan to get you started:

Running should be fun!!

Before I show you the plan for getting you started (a very simple plan, by the way), I should say this again…

The important thing is that you GET started…

And then…

Just KEEP MOVING!!

This plan is simple, and flexible. Follow it exactly or simply use it as a guideline, especially if you’re already exercising a little bit.

Start where you are, and don’t be embarrassed about it. Remember, with just a little time and consistency, you’ll be getting in shape, losing weight, feeling and looking better…

… And you’ll do it the healthy way, with your own work, not any cheap pills or diets!

If you haven’t run in years…

… don’t go out and run 30 minutes the first day. This is a SURE WAY to hurt yourself and end your running career before it begins!

7-Week Getting Started Plan:

See the full plan at(http://www.ordinaryrunner.com/running-get-started-plan.html).

Week 1:

Alternate 1 minute fast walk and 1 minute slow, for a total of 15 minutes. (5 days this week)

(If you want to, substitute a slow jog for the fast walk portion. Just be careful, and be realistic! Remember, patience and consistency are the keys!)

Week 2:

Alternate 3 minute fast walk and 1 minute slow, for a total of 15 minutes. (5 days this week)

Week 3:

Alternate 7 minute fast walk and 1 minute slow, for a total of 20 minutes. (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

Alternate 1 minute slow jog and 1 minute slow walk, for a total of 15 minutes. (Tuesday, Saturday)

Week 4:

Alternate 2 minute jog and 1 minute slow walk, for a total of 20 minutes. (6 days this week)

Week 5:

Alternate 4 minute slow jog and 1 minute slow walk, for a total of (25 minutes Mon, Thur; 20 minutes Tu, Wed, Sat)

Week 6:

Alternate 5 minute jog and 1 minute walk, for a total of 30 minutes. (6 days this week)

Week 7:

Alternate 7 minute jog and 1 minute walk, for a total of 35 minutes. (5 days this week)

At the end of this 7 week period, you will be losing weight and feeling better! You’ll be well on your way to fitness, and you’ll notice you can run longer and longer!

Once again… You’re just getting started! Being an Ordinary Runner is a lifestyle, and WON’T happen overnight.

This is not a “Get Skinny Quick” lie, like you see on infomercials. This is the real thing!

Just Keep Moving!!!

Summit to Address the Future of Britain’s Communications

PM Gordon Brown will accompany culture secretary Andy Burnham, trade secretary Lord Mandelson, communications minister, and Digital Britain chief Stephen Carter at the Digital Britain summit to be held at the British library in London.

The summit, which is a follow up to the Digital Britain report, boasts of the presence of key figures from the telecom, media and technology industries, and is predicted to gain more public interest than the report. The goal of this summit is to take up the future of Britain’s communication for wide ranging discussions, which the report miserably failed to do. Issues ranging from media to mobile broadband will be addressed and special attention will be given to the potential that broadband holds in helping towards an economic recovery.

The Digital Britain report had failed to give a conclusive say on any communication issue, with the government and Ofcom still battling on the spectrum allocation problem, which is a hurdle to one of the stated aims of the report, namely, 2MB broadband access across Britain by 2012.

Lord Carter said that the summit would be a platform for all the leaders of the digital economy to voice their opinion on the improvements that can be carried out in terms of infrastructure and the content and creative industries of Britain in order to stay ahead of its international competitors.

He said the meeting would help them reach a final decision over the next two months. This seems to be a step in the right direction, and the summit could lead to greater conclusiveness in terms of Britain’s telecom future.

The Inner Voice, Your Gut Feeling

There is a voice in all of us that tells us what we should be doing. Many times it happens that you get an opportunity and you end up passing on it because your inner voice was not for it. Later you find out the opportunity was not a good one and you made the right choice. There is also the opposite of that. An opportunity does not look good on paper or in some other way, but your inner voice says to go for it. You end up following your inner voice and it ends up working out for the better.

The inner voice is sometimes referred to as a gut feeling. When you meet someone for the first time you will experience your gut feeling about them, it usually happens so fast. It is a feeling of liking and trust, or a feeling of something just is not right. As time goes on you can either go with your gut feeling or go against it. You can probably go through many instances in your past when you went against your gut feeling and later you end up so confused because you did not listen to it. Your life can end up being the most positive when you listen to your gut feeling, for some reason or another it is statistically more right than wrong.

8 Simple Ways to Defend Yourself Against Evil Doers Both Online and Off

There once was a time when the only option people had when shopping was to either call in or snail mail in a catalog order form or to jump in the family car, fight through traffic, and wait in long checkout lines to complete the purchase.

Well, nowadays there’s still a few major mail order catalogs floating around and we all still visit our local retail outlets, but time has also introduced the internet as one of our options to shop from the comforts of home.

The internet has made shopping at home a breeze and along with it has unfortunately brought the so called “Evil Doers” who I believe have such little happiness in their own lives that they must leech pleasure from the hardworking and innocent individuals of our wonderful and surrounding nations.

And yes, I am speaking of the ever growing problem known as Identity and Credit Card Theft.

As an online and offline consumer it is in my best interest to protect myself while at the same time wanting to help others protect themselves as well.

Below is a short yet thorough list of ways that you can follow to help yourself stay safe and be a happy consumer and keep “Evil Doers” at bay.

1) Always shred sensitive materials such as bank statements before throwing them away in the regular trash. Just because the paper documents are in the garbage doesn’t mean they are safe from peeping eyes.

2) Contact your local bank or credit card provider to request a card with a low limit. This can make you feel more at ease about shopping at those not so familiar places and can reduce the damages caused by such an ill intended individual if they get hold of your number.

Also never give out the 3-letter Card Identification Number found on the back of the credit card unless you absolutely trust the merchant you are dealing with.

3) NEVER give out your social security card number for any reason! If capable you are best to obtain a tax I.D. number from the Internal Revenue Service or local tax agency.

If any “Evil Doer” gets hold of your personal information such as home address, birth date, and Social Security Number you are at great risk of being victimized.

4) Only purchase items online through secure order pages which is typically indicated by a small, yellow, “Padlock” image usually located somewhere near the bottom of your internet browsers window.

5) If you ever receive an email asking for sensitive information and claiming to be from a company that you have an account with, NEVER supply the requested information and never click any links or hit reply to send such personal information back to the “company”.

Many legit companies will not ask for sensitive information via email.

If you get such an email you are better off to make a copy of the letter you received then close that browser window and then open a NEW window and access the company directly from their website address.

You should then submit the email you made a copy of to the company so that their anti- fraud personnel can take the necessary steps to send out warnings of possible fraudulent activity to be aware of to its members.

6) Be cautious about downloading and installing unnecessary programs onto your computer. If there are programs that you indeed must download ALWAYS scan the files for viruses and make sure that your anti-virus program is up to date.

There’s a wide variety of viruses that are distributed to unprotected computer systems and some of which are known as “Key Stroke Loggers” that record your sensitive log in names and passwords and then are made known to the trouble maker.

7) If possible try to utilize 2 different computers when using the internet.

One computer should only be used for general internet surfing just in case it was to obtain a virus such as a Key Stroke Logger so there would be little threat of someone getting your personal information.

Only use the second computer to access more sensitive information such as online banking or other important websites that require passwords and important information.

8) Finally, if there are young members of the family that have computer use privileges be sure to monitor and restrict the sites and programs they are allowed to use.

Many fraudulent individuals love to prey on the unexpecting and inexperienced web surfer.

In any case just be certain to contact the police or appropriate authorities the INSTANT you believe that you have become a victim of Identity Theft or Credit Card Number Theft.

The sooner you tell the authorities the better the chance they can help you recover from a financial catastrophe.
