Bryan Ellis on Virtual Real Estate Investing

A newcomer to the world of investments in the notion of “Virtual Real Estate Investing“. What is meant by “Virtual Real Estate Investing” ranges from online games like SecondLife (where real profit can be made) to the use of internet technologies to make normal real estate investors more profitable.

In order to figure out the truth of the matter, I sought out Bryan Ellis, whose experience in the fledgling industry is truly impressive.

When I began using the term virtual real estate investing in the late 1990s, I did so because I saw clear parallels between the strategies used for profiting from physical real estate and those that would create income in the online world, said Ellis.

Bryan Ellis cites the similar strategies one can employe to make money from “virtual property” and “physical property” as a primary parallel of the two markets. “These types of assets - websites and physical real estate - can be monetized in very similar ways like buy lo/sell high, leasing/rental and advertising opportunities” he says.

The parallels really are obvious. Consider: A valuable piece of real estate is valuable largely due to the interest that other people have in that specific location. Similarly, ownership of a desirable domain name is valuable for the same reasons. So it doesn’t matter if you own physical real estate or virtual real estate - you’ll likely use similar strategies to turn them into money in your pocket.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing., Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

When to Use Free Stuff to Market Your Products and Services

SIT AND CONTEMPLATE THIS STORY

In 1999, I was contacted by a furniture company asking for
advice about how to turn around their internet business. It
seems that they were very successful in the non-digital,
real-world, business environment. They were a small enterprise
generating a few million dollars a year in sales for their
furniture products.

Yet, they had been on the internet for three years at that
time, and they had yet to sell their first piece of furniture
online.

As was explained to me, they were pumping the traffic through
their website to the tune of 100,000 unique visitors every
month. But, for some reason, they were selling zero products.

This was a manufacturing company who was trying to jump into
the retail market through their website.

I took a look at their site. Their products looked excellent.
Their website could have been tweaked to make it easier to
navigate. They could have changed the color scheme to make
it a bit more attractive and easier on the eyes.

But, the truth be known, manufacturers are not always the best
people to write the sales copy for their products. Sure, their
descriptions were great if they were using their websites to
reach out to more retailers and wholesale agents, but they were
trying to reach into the direct retail market.

They honestly needed a different type of copywriter to sit down
and write the sales copy for their products. They needed someone
who specialized in selling products to the end user rather than
someone who was good at selling to the people who wished to buy
and sell their products. They also needed a copywriter who
understood the nuances of using words to help drive targeted
traffic to their website through the search engines and online
advertising.

Each of these points helped them to better tailor their website
to reach their intended customers. But, the one point that
helped them to turn their bad money into good money was to
recognize that they Should Not give away a free office chair
every month to some lucky visitor.

I don’t know if you realize it or not, but there are hundreds
of websites and ezines dedicated to help people to find free
stuff on the internet for the taking.

My ex-girlfriend spent a solid six months online looking for
free stuff and registering for give-aways. She was knocking
down anywhere from $300 to $500 per month just in free
products from the websites she visited.

The important question to ask yourself is this.

Did she ever intend to buy a single product from a single
website that she visited??? Nope. She was Not on the internet
to buy things. She was on the internet to Get free things.

In the previous 18 months, the furniture company that I was
advising had given away 18 office chairs with a value of $300
each.

As soon as they removed the monthly drawing for a free chair,
their traffic nearly dried up. As it turned out, 98% of their
site traffic was only dropping around to register for a chance
to win a free chair.

Now, our furniture company was ready to get down to the business
of selling chairs without wasting their resources on people who
were there only for the freebie.

THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERYTHING, INCLUDING “FREE”

So-called internet guru’s jump up on their soapboxes and declare
that you should give away something in order to drive paying
customers to your website.

What kind of “customers” do they say??? Paying Customers???

I don’t think so.

If the thing that you are giving away has any real value, then
be prepared for an onslaught of freebie-seekers to come around
sucking up your bandwidth and your free products and services
of value.

If what you are offering has zero real value, then you need to
know that the people you are trying to draw in with your freebie
will see right through your offer and see you for the sham that
you are trying to sell.

FREE EBOOKS OR FREE ADS TO GET SUBSCRIBERS

I used to believe that I could offer a free ebook to people to
get them to subscribe to my ezine. I should have known better.

For a six-week period, I tested the concept of “free” to get
subscribers for my own ezine. On the surface, it worked great.
Under the microscope, it was an abject failure.

In the six weeks that I offered a free ebook in exchange for
a new subscriber, I netted 500 new subscribers per week. Then
on the following week, I noticed that I had really only netted
50 new subscribers for my efforts. Okay cool, I thought, I am
picking up 50 new subscribers every week on account of my
promotion. So, I ran my promotion again with similar results.

At the end of six weeks, I thought to myself, “Wow! I picked
up 300 new subscribers for my efforts.”

Then a funny thing happened. I stopped the promotion for a
few weeks and found myself up only twenty subscribers from
when I started my freebie campaign.

Odd I thought. At the time, I was running my own list server,
and I had a hankering to know the truth.

If you don’t know what a “hankering” is, I am from Oklahoma,
so we get those a lot. ;-) Dictionary.com defines a “hankering”
as, “To have a strong, often restless desire.”

When you have a hankering and you have the time, you can find
the truth of a matter.

After comparing the timing of the release of my “freebie”
advertisement with the subscription timestamps, comparing
those with my new subscriber comments to eliminate the people
who told me they subscribed as a result of a referral, and
then comparing the remaining addresses to my unsubscription
records, I learned what I should have known in advance of my
campaign.

90% of the people who came for the freebie were gone in a week.
A full 99% of the people who came for the freebie were gone in
three weeks. Only 1% of the freebie takers lasted for more than
a few weeks, and a large majority of those were completely gone
after three months.

The successes that I felt that I had accomplished, from offering
a freebie for subscription, turned out to be a complete waste
of my time and energy.

NEVER EVER GIVE AWAY YOUR BREAD AND BUTTER

Those of you who know who I am also know that I offer a service
of value to people who write articles to promote their online
businesses.

Now and again, I will get someone knocking on my door, promising
me tons of new business, if only I will give them one freebie
to prove the value of my service.

Going against my better instincts, I did take this offer on two
occasions. I won’t do it again.

See, the thing is that the writer is responsible for creating
a title that is appealing to both the publishers and the
readers. Without a good title, an article will fail to produce
results.

The writer is responsible for the creation of the article and
the presentation of his information in an interesting and
intriguing manner. Without a good story, an article will fail
to produce results.

The writer is responsible for the wording of the Author’s
Resource Box. If the resource box is unappealing to the reader,
then the reader will not click through and review the writer’s
website or program.

The writer is responsible for tackling a topic that would be
of interest to his target market. If an article does not reach
the people who would be interested in what the writer is selling,
then the article will again fail to produce the desired results.

If a writer sends me a crud article that has no hope for
accomplishing the results that he or she desires, then the
fault is not mine. I did my part. I put their article into
the hands of more than 12,000 publishers who were looking
for content to reprint in their ezines and their websites.

If the writer fails to create an article that will serve his
desired end, and he gets to use my service to put it into
circulation, then the writer will need a scapegoat for his
or her failure. There I am, the scapegoat for the failures
of the writer.

I SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF MYSELF, THEY SAY…

The last guy who asked me to give a freebie distribution for
his article got mad when I said no. He proceeded to brow beat
me for being unwilling to give away something away in order to
earn his business on the backside. After all he said, he gives
away a lot of free stuff on his website to drum up new business.

It is true that it takes a lot to ruffle my feathers. Everyone
who knows me well knows that it takes a miracle to make me mad.
This is a fact seriously upsets my wife when she is in a mood
to argue… ;-)

This guy made me mad, but I held my temper in check.

Sir, if you knew me, you would also know that I give several
hours of my week to help other writers distribute their articles
for free on the internet. People who know me know that I own
and moderate hundreds of open-membership, moderated-posting,
article distribution groups on the internet.

It takes a lot of my time to make these resources available to
the internet community and to make sure that these resources are
not abused, and I do not get paid to provide these “free” writer
resources.

Sir, I give a lot back to the writer’s who make up the writing
community on the internet. I just don’t give away my bread
and butter. And, if I were to give away a bread and butter job,
I would much prefer to give that service to a paying customer
rather than to a person who out-of-the-blue is promising me
the moon and the stars.

IN CONCLUSION

I don’t give away my bread and butter, to anyone, and you should
not either. There is a time and place for everything, including
freebies. Just be careful that you don’t give your products and
services to people who are only there to get a freebie from you.

Sales and Marketing: Numbers Rule

Let’s talk about some numbers and how they relate to network marketing. They are equally applicable to marketing on the internet or to offline marketing.

Specifically, we are going to talk about the 80/20 rule, the rule of 2, the rule of 7, and location, location, location.

Huh? That last one isn’t about numbers!

Well, it sorta is. We’ll get there in a while.

In the meantime, let’s start with the 80/20 rule.

Several years ago, a major financial services institution conducted a study to determine WHY its top sales people WERE top sales people. Once they waded through all the data, and threw out the immaterial items, they were left with one fact glaring in their faces. The top sales people were the top sales people BECAUSE they made the most calls and contacts, and handed out the most brochures and business cards. As a result, they gave the most presentations and…you guessed it…made the most sales.

Other studies throughout the years, as well as some of our own experiences seem to bear this out. Ever been in an organization where 20% of the people seemed to do 80% of the work? Oddly enough, that’s roughly the percentages the study I mentioned came up with.

Not only were 20% of the sales force generating 80% of the sales, it seemed that, in general, out of 100 contacts, they got to do about 20 presentations. Out of 100 presentations, they got about 20 sales.

Now these figures are not gospel, and merely indicate a trend, but they can be used to our profit. In the area of statistics, it is known that it is difficult to get an accurate analysis or prediction from a small sample. The larger the sample, the more accurate the results!

Okay, so if the 80/20 rule is true, and if I have a decent product and presentation, and if I remember to brush my teeth and put on clean underwear before making my pitch, I should nail 20 out of 100?

Well, again, this figure is merely indicative of a trend, but if you make a large number of pitches…er, presentations, you should expect to see some of them translate into sales, hence the “location, location, location” crack. Or maybe I should have said, “locations, locations, locations”?

Lots of locations

The more ads you place, the more brochures you hand out, the more links you provide to your offer, etc., the more inquiries, presentations, and sales you can hope to make. Remember, by the way, on the internet, your website is probably your presentation.

What we are talking about is volume, or bigger numbers. Volume is measured by numbers. See, I made it fit into the numbers thing.

Just to make my point, I had two friends become millionaires in two different network marketing programs. In both instances, they were nice but ordinary persons, and neither was by any stretch of the imagination a sales whiz. However, for over 3 years, each of them handed a brochure to everyone they met and answered questions as best they could. For 4 years, I worked on some websites when and where I could find a few minutes, and eventually, though I was working a 60 hour work week elsewhere, I began receiving WEEKLY commission checks in excess of $2,000.00.

What my two friends also found, as did I and most other network marketers, was that the 80/20 rule also applies to our downlines. Most will do nothing. Some will do a little. A rare few will be winners, but usually not by their own innate genius or greatness, but simply by a willingness to put in the necessary effort for the required length of time.

Now, the rule of 7.

While you are making all these presentations, handing out brochures, buying ads, etc., be aware that many people will not respond until they have seen that ad, or received that information 7 times. While there will be a few early adopters who see the info once or twice and buy in, most of your potential sales will come from those who have seen your ad several times. So don’t assume that simply because you sent someone a great ad and they didn’t respond, therefore all is lost. Send them the info again, or post the ad again.

Finally the rule of 2.

This applies mainly to ventures with a multi-level marketing program. You and I are each only one, and if we work very hard, we can only make a limited number of sales. If our income depends only on our personal sales, we are likely to make what is quaintly referred to as a pittance!

However, as is often pointed out in multi-level marketing literature, if I recruit 2 people, and they recruit 2 people, and they….on thru 5 levels, let’s say, I will have a downline of 62 people producing income for me. Depending on the program, this could be a lucrative proposition! Many multi-level organizations go much deeper than 5 levels. Our goal IS to build as large a downline as possible, so getting 3 on each level does even more. In fact, if each of us gets 3 in our downline instead of 2, our downline changes from 62 to 363!

Also, the type of program and its payouts will also influence your income. For example, one program with which I am affiliated would pay me $490 if each of my 2 members each made only one sale. In this particular program, however, my downline makes that and more each week, and those are only NEW sales. A program with residual income provided by re-orders can increase those figures immensely.

Just remember, however, to get those 2 GOOD producers, I will probably have to have a field of 10 or more recruits from which they can rise. In most network marketing ventures, the unfortunate truth is that I will probably need a few more than 10 recruits to get 2 GOOD ones!

But! Once I have those two good ones, and they have their two good ones, etc., there is no stopping me.

Redlands Online Shopping, Very Much Needed

One of the difficult hurdles to overcome while living in Redlands can be getting what you need locally in a timely fashion. Like many small towns several of the store close early or at the very moment that most working adults clock out from work. It can prove to be quite a toll to race to the nearby boutique before the closed sign drops.

Fortunately a few stores have blossomed in the area that not only offer specialty items but have a website as well. This can be quite helpful considering many of the new shops on State Street still keep bankers hours. The only regrettable note to still mention is that several of these stores are not taking full advantage of what Redlands web design firms have to offer.

Regardless, several of the sites ought to display more merchandise for the customer to browse through, and more deliberate premeditated layouts. The convenience of completing your usual shopping tasks in a matter of clicks is a necessity for living in Southern California and just about anywhere.

If the local library can have a website of all they have to offer, then design firms in Redlands ought to take advantage of the businesses that need their expertise to catalog their own inventory.

MLM Pyramid Misunderstanding, It’s Actually Inverted and Fair

Many people that bad mouth MLM industry use the pyramid structure to give impression that it’s a scam type of business whereby the people at the top earn all the money while people at the bottom earns few hundred dollars. Can you spot something? I’ll show you…

The above is only true in traditional business. Those big businesses you see everyday, and where you are currently employed.

MLM business pyramid structure is inverted. How? Well, people in network marketing business starts from the bottom and have a chance of climbing to the top where there is a lot of space for as many as possible that are ready to work hard and commit 3-5 years to reach the top.

In an inverted pyramid structure, the space at the top is enormous. Climbing to the top does not create competition among others who are already there. Same is not true in traditional business pyramid structure. The space at the top is very limited and it’s only lucky employees or those with extra talent and education that get to the top of the structure.

It takes many years to reach the apex of the traditional pyramid structure while in MLM business you can get to the top of the pyramid in less than 5 years.

In traditional business, you become a liability to the company by climbing to the top because of the increase in income. In MLM business pyramid, you become more valuable to the company and to your leader by climbing the struture no matter how much you earn. That is why MLM leaders are more than happy to help you climb the struture quickly, and you do that while having fun building your business from the comfort of your home.

Lastly, MLM inverted pyramid allow you to earn more income than your leader who introduced you to the business. You get paid according to the effort you invest in your business, unlike traditional business whereby people at the top that do little earn the big checks and it is not possible for people at the bottom to earn more than those at the top. Is your salary more than your manager’s? I guess not..

Now that you have read this far, which of the pyramid do you think is unfair?

Make Money With A Business Opportunity Online

There are so many business opportunities these days that promise to help you make money online. What should you do to choose one? Here are some tips to help you with your decision.

1. Find a business opportunity online that actually makes money. This isn’t hard to do. If the business opportunity has products that you would actually want to buy, then this might be an ideal opportunity for you.

2. Figure out a niche that will go with the business opportunity you have chosen. You may sell frying pans, but your customers will think you give away recipes that use a frying pan, and you recommend a good frying pan to use!

3. Making money with a business opportunity online that actually has a website. Some business opportunities actually provide a website for you to use. Use it! Less effort on your part and you can concentrate instead of bringing in visitors.

4. Don’t join a business opportunity that promises you will make money but doesn’t have products. If the only things you do for a business opportunity is recruit others to the business opportunity, this isn’t a great way to make money.

5. Take a step back for a moment and look at the market. Can you compete with the other companies out there? There is always a way but if you’re looking to become the next Wal-Mart, there is no way you’ll make it. Instead, try to be the best soap making company or whatever you’ve set your goals to.

6. Study others in the business opportunity you are looking at and ask them how much money they make at it. Ask them how business seems to go. Don’t ask one person, ask two or three or as many as you can get your hands on.

7. Ask people before you sign up for a business opportunity about the business and the products. If people have had a bad experience all around with this company, why would you want to join it?

8. Make sure that when you do get involved with a business opportunity that you don’t just sign up and do nothing with it. You must work to make the money you want with that business opportunity.

9. Take in a consultant to help you with your first steps. It may be an added expense but it will sure help you along the way.

10. Take care to do what it is you want to do. Don’t get swallowed up in all the hype. If you won’t buy it, don’t sign up for it. Take a day or two to think about a business opportunity you just heard about before taking the next step.

All in all, trust your gut instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Sneak Up On Your Competition

Dear Internet marketers:

After going through a couple of months of frustration, I finally came up with ways to “sneak up” on my competition.
I thought I would save you a lot of time, money and hard
work and share, my experiance with you.

First allow me to state a fact:

Success = Commitment = Time + Money.

Think about it. If money is an issue then time increases to have success increase. Or, if Time is an issue, then money needs to be spent to maintain a path to success. The ideal commitment would be to have an equal mix of both Time and
Money.

Here is another fact.

Something for nothing = nothing.

Please allow me explain. If you receive a no cost offer,
and make no attempt to investigate, and learn more about
how it will benefit you, you have no commitment and nothing
for joining. In other words, read training tips. Set up your account so it is functioning properly.

You just made a commitment. You have at least invested
something valuable, your time. Now you have something.

Now build on that.

Make a commitment to promote your opportunity. Start your traffic flowing and begin recruiting to have an income. If money is the issue, invest more time with email campaigns
that are designed well and SPAM free.

Now the sneak attack!

Drive traffic to your alfiliate URL or website. Use the following:

Traffic Exchanges, Banner Exchanges, Link Exchanges, (if you have our own site and control its contents). Write articles, (make sure they have your opportunity link in them.) then, publish them to the internet.

Now you really did something and your commitment increased considerably, without spending a dime, but by investing a considerable amount of time. Your investment just
became substantially more valuable.

Finally, establish a “Brand” name. Mine is Opportunities
Now Internet Marketing Services. I registered my brand with
the U. S. Patent Office and Arizona Secretary of State as a TRADE NAME. Cost? About $35.00 doing it myself. That was a
whileback, I don’t know if those fees have changed.

I use my “Brand” on everything. Letters, Newsletters, email, site submissions.

This is powerful advertising!

Now my personal KEYWORD is:
“opportunities now internet marketing services”

My company is in any major Search Engine. By using that keyword people can find out just about everything there is to know about my company, including my links to the Opportunity I am promoting. But, that is not a common Keyword. I need to let people know aboutit, so again in all contact information, mentioned above, I include a note in my signature that says:

“for more information about us use KEYWORD:
“opportunities now internet marketing services” in any major search engine.

Site submission is uncontrolled chaos. No one, and I mean NO ONE knows what GOOGLE thinks. Employees of GOOGLE don’t know how they evaluate sites for ranking. Promises of top search engine ranking in 10 days is are expensive to initiate, and
you may get ranked by some obscure KEYWORD that no one uses.

I thought about that for awhile and came up with a solution.

Back to Branding.

Become COKE, PEPSI, FORD, CHEVROLET, etc. “BRAND” your product, service, or website, and use your “BRAND” name everywhere; your ads, email, website, submissions, keywords. Gain recognition and Internet “visibility”.

This is a slow process, but it WORKS! In about 30 to 60 days you should have top page listing for YOUR BRAND. During that waiting process get prepared for traffic. Upgrade your membership in the Opportunity(s) you are involved with. That way you will start earning an income which will exceed the
cost.

I also designed my own logo, (good bad or indifferent). I use my logo in every ad, every newsletter, anywhere I can. I am there, in #1 spot, and in some cases, thetop first 10 positions or more. I have no keyword competition, no keyword bidding,
just on going site submission., and exploding traffic.

My site stats now show over 30% of my traffic comes from my brand name. That traffic has more than doubled month to month for the last three months.

The Link Exchange, Banner Exchange, and Traffic Exchange I belong to help as well.

Happy marketing, your online friend,

The Easiest Way To Overcome Vanity

Vanity- it’s easy to mask, easy to forget, and easy to justify. We hide it behind dignity and poise. The sins connected to this weakness aren’t quite as severe as those associated with pride, gluttony, and lust. But it can eventually lead up to some serious problems. And it can keep us from becoming an instrument of Christ.

The solution (humility) might be one of the most difficult virtues to master, but John the Baptist seems to have had a pretty good handle on it. Here’s the guy who baptized Christ, and later sends his own followers away because he knows his time is over. So what was his secret? How do we stop worrying about our own worldly décor, and start the journey to becoming Christ’s hand maid? The answer is self-love.

It might not sound like part of our Christian philosophy, but with the proper back drop, you can maintain selflessness and self-love in a co-existing format. How? By knowing our own self-worth, where our value comes from, and how to improve it.
So what are we worth? Let’s start with the simple fact that we’re creations of God. And since God doesn’t make trash, that says pretty much for us. Now look at the fact that Christ Himself became man, suffered, and dies for us. Wow! That raises the value pot even more. We’re actually worth the life of God.

Why are we so valuable? Because God made us. That’s it. There’s nothing more. All that we’ve accomplished, our assets, and our actions mean absolutely nothing. In other words, our nice house, perfect hair, & stylish clothing are worthless. Our career and community stature are meaningless. Even our good and charitable works do nothing to make us better.

This almost answers the next question. ‘How do we improve ourselves?’ But it only almost answers it, because it doesn’t address the fact that God not only created us, but continues to work through us. So even though we can’t improve ourselves at all, we can let God do it. Give Him control, and He’ll make us better, reject Him, and our value will drop.

So by knowing, and loving ourselves, and desiring to make ourselves better, we can forget about the worldly illusions of greatness. We can overcome the vanity that might keep God from acting through us.
