Jewelry can be beautiful to look at, fun to buy, and can make bold and revealing statements about you. Hear are some tips for greater enjoyment of your favorite gold and silver jewelry.
1. Never swim in a chlorinated pool while wearing gold and silver jewelry.
2. Always apply make-up, perfumes, oils or colognes before you put on your gold and silver jewelry
3. Keep both your skin and your gold and silver jewelry clean and free of oil.
4. Using an absorbent, abrasive-free body powder on areas that your gold and silver jewelry touches your skin can help with skin discoloration.
5. If you do have any skin discoloration you may need to move to a higher gold content. Say, from 14K gold jewelry to 18K jewelry.
6. Are your gold and silver chains all tied-up in knots? If so, here’s a nifty little trick for straightening them out. Dust your chain with a little talcum powder and then try to unknot it. If the knot is stubborn, place a small drop of baby oil on a sheet of wax paper. Lay the knot in the oil and work it out with two pins; then clean the chain as instructed below.
7. Don’t be afraid to wear gold and silver jewelry together. Artful use of accessories that use both metals provide an effective visual segue’ or bridge.
8. For daily cleaning it is recommended to use a simple jewelry polishing cloth that is impregnated with special jewelry cleaner. These are widely available and are very easy to use. Store your cloth in a plastic zip-lock bag, and keep in your jewelry drawer or armoire. It is a good idea to have one cleaning cloth for gold and one for silver.
9. For a Super Spring Cleaning of your gold and silver jewelry, mix 1cup of clean warm water with cup of ammonia. Soak your jewelry in this solution for about 15 minutes; gently scrub with a soft, clean toothbrush, then rinse in warm water. Air dry on an absorbent paper towel. When thoroughly dry, you may lightly buff with a soft flannel cloth.
10. If a ring gets stuck on your finger; spray the area surrounding the ring with Windex. Wiggle and twist the ring right off.
11. For a slightly more “in depth” cleaning you may want to use a liquid jewelry cleaner.
12. For cleaning badly tarnished silver, here’s a neat little trick.
A. Cover the inside bottom of a heat-proof glass dish on bowl with a piece of aluminum foil, shiny side up.
B. Place the tarnished silver in the bottom of the dish, contacting the aluminum foil.
C. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of baking soda, and then slowly pour boiling water to cover the piece. The tarnish will gradually collect on the aluminum foil.
D. Remove your silver, rinse thoroughly, and polish.

1. Try and educate yourself before you go to buy a diamond, especially on the color, clarity, cut and carat factors. Do a little of window shopping to get to know the current styles and designs.

2. A diamond’s cut is the most important factor to be considered since it affects the diamond’s cost, beauty and durability. The diamond’s sparkle depends upon its cut, since it changes the refractivity of the diamond. Thin cuts make lifeless diamonds. A well cut diamond can fetch upto twice the actual value of the stone. A wrong or faulty cut can make or break the diamond.

3. Clarity as commonly believed does not affect the sparkle of the diamond. Clarity does not have any effect on beauty of the diamond.

4. Diamonds cost more when purchased in full carat values. A diamond of 0.9 carat costs mush less than a diamond of 1 carat and a diamond of 1.9 carats costs much lesser than a diamond of 1.9 carats and so on. Choosing a diamond of 0.9 or 1.9 carats would be a great way to get value for money.

5. While choosing the size, look to alternate shapes rather than a round one. A round diamond tends to look smaller. Oval or pear shaped diamonds of the same carat value look bigger than the round ones.

6. Choose a design that has more number of smaller stones in good setting. They tend to cost less.

7. Considerations of color can be set aside when you set the diamond in white gold or platinum. A colorless diamond can be very expensive, so choose the base metal according to the color of the stone.

A diamond as generally believed need not be flawless. A flaw does not decrease its value or beauty. If a diamond is properly cut, flaws will not be visible. For that matter, nothing ever is perfect.

For you to enjoy your treasures, they need to be somewhere close and accessible, but NOT in the Bedside Jewelry Box.

Although we DO advise a Jewelry Box on the Dresser and easily seen, BUT ONE CONTAINING SEVERAL PIECES OF JUNK JEWELRY. It is a well documented fact that Burglars nearly ALWAYS check the Bedroom First knowing that people hide things there.

In general terms we have discovered, through HUGE amounts of research, (Please don’t write and ask us how we know such things) that your average Crim or Thug, doesn’t know the difference between Gold or Plated items, Diamonds or Shiny pebbles of Glass.

In the dimly lit beam of a torch, a handful of Jewelry, stuffed into a pocket, stops them searching any further, and they leave without any more damage.

If it looks like gold, it must be gold… Right?

Well, NO! But this can work in OUR Favor.

So OCCASIONALLY buy that antique looking string of pearls (which we know are glass beads) from the local Op shop or Charity Church Bazaar, and salt it into your ‘attractive’ Junk items in the Jewelry Box on the Dresser.

Costume Jewelry CAN look a Million Dollars. Old Brooches in a Base metal and containing a ‘Plastic’ Cameo, can feel and seem to be worth all the trouble.

Help these poor people out. Do the right thing. Give them something to Steal, and they will leave you alone, next time.

But what about the Good Stuff?

If you do ‘Hide’ it somewhere in your home there are a couple of points we wish to discuss. Firstly: tell a trusted or close relative where they are.

Too many people hide things and then forget where they put them. Over the years it slips from memory and after they ‘Cross Over’ as John Edwards would say, they get tossed out with the rest of the rubbish never to see light of day again. Shame - Shame - Shame. Please tell someone.

Don’t hide the items in extreme temperatures.

It has seemed that over the past decade or so, some people have been hiding things in the Freezer. This is NOT recommended as Gold and Silver items may survive, but some gemstones are sure to suffer.

Opal for example contains a great amount of water in their chemical make up. Freeze opal and you will NOT have anything with color left after a very short while. Pearls too, and most of the softer ‘Organic’ gemstones like Coral or Ivory or Amber will all be damaged by this process.

The Kitchen is a good place to hide things, as is the Laundry.

We have had some clients (friends of ours) who hide things in the Children’s Toy room. As long as it can’t be found or played with by the Kids, it is safe.

If you come home one day and the Darling Little Ones are wearing your best Diamond Jewelry, chances are you didn’t hide it well enough. Under the Lego pieces, just doesn’t cut it.

Regardless of whether you have your items hidden or in a ‘Safety Deposit’ style box or wall safe etc, you should still insure your items.

When it comes to diamonds, there are numerous scams to avoid. Most scams are minor, but there are some major ones that come up from time to time concerning the buying and selling of diamonds. Scams occur simply because most people who buy diamonds - for whatever reasons - don’t know that much about diamonds. Therefore, they are easily fooled.

Jewelry stores like to show their diamonds in bright lights. Lights make diamonds shine. Ask to see the diamond in a different, darker type of lighting as well. Jewelry also stores often run ‘fluorescence’ scams to varying degrees. Referring to a diamond as a blue-white diamond is such a scam. A blue-white diamond sounds very unique and special, but in fact, this type of diamond is of lesser quality - even though the jeweler will try to make you think you are getting something special.

A common scam that most jewelry stores participate in is the Carat Total Weight scam. The tag on the piece of jewelry, usually a ring, only states the total carat weight of all diamonds in the piece, instead of listing the total weights separately for each diamond. This leads consumers to believe that the main diamond in the piece is actually bigger than it is. Ask what the total carat weight of the center stone is. Also beware of fractions. Jewelry stores are allowed to round off diamond weights. This means that if the jeweler tells you that it is a carat diamond, it is probably between and carat - but closer to .

Some truly unscrupulous jewelers target those who want appraisals on diamonds that were given to them as gifts or that were purchased elsewhere. They will try to tell you that the diamond is worthless, or worth less than it actually is worth - and offer to take it off your hands or trade it for a much better diamond, along with the cash to make up the difference. This is called low balling. Get a second, third, and even a forth opinion before taking any action.

There are many more scams that jewelry stores commonly pull on unsuspecting consumers. Just use your best judgment, and purchase your diamonds with the utmost care and consideration.
